One-way ticket to Mars?

One-way ticket to Mars? - CSMonitor.com

I am a geek, and I'm the kind of sci-fi geek brought up on ubiquitous stories regarding space travel.  Ubiquitous and inevitable space travel.  I love the idea of putting humans on Mars ... just for a start.

But I am of two minds about this idea.  On the one hand, it seems like a great idea for the true adventurers of the human race, the people who really want to live.  There was a time before kids I would have had a burning desire to take a one-way flight to Mars myself.

On the other hand, it seems slightly gruesome and completely greedy on the part of our society to ask for or even accept the potentially ultimate sacrifice from someone, so that we can save money for our other more typically wastrel expenses.

Really, I just wish we could get our priorities in order.

Good list. Geeky and yet funny too.

And don't forget:
  • "A floppy was a disk that held very little data, but took up a fairly good amount of space and was fragile."
  • "I remember a time before the Internet.  Yes, you used computers that weren't connected to any other computers or servers."
  • "No, Google didn't exist then."
  • "No, really.  Kbps. 2400 baud was a big upgrade."
  • "A keyboard?  How quaint."
